So it really helps if whoevers watching is almost held captive, enough in the thrall of the season to tolerate all its janky zigs and zags. Thats never been more true than in the recently premiered Season 5, which Im glad I didnt review after only watching the handful of episodes provided for critics. I hate admitting this about a show, because its an insane demand for television to make, and I dont want to give into it, but you really do have to watch the entirety of an Orange Is the New Black season before you can fairly assess it. And the best way to do that is in one or two sittings, before the shows myriad nagging problems have time to catch up and really irritate you. The season is a mess. Set during a four day prison riot, Season 5 takes on a lot of narrative risk and succeeds about half the time. The writers have to both compress and expand their storytelling to fit the limited chronology, making a lot and a little happen at once. All that pressure has led to some serious out of character behavior, and to some of the shows most eye rolling digressions to date. Particularly an episode in which the prisoners force the guards, held as hostages, to participate in a talent show. The whole bit is just a senseless preamble to a Magic Mike homagenot an entirely unwelcome one, but given how much is at stake this season, it really shouldnt be there. In this season, Orange Is the New Black is perhaps more jumpy and unfocused than its ever been, which is saying something. I empathize with those who tried a few episodes and then said screw it. I likely would have too, had I not been in a yes, work mandated binge frenzy. But I was, and let me tell you somewhere around episode 7 or 8, all that messiness seems to become somehow. The season is about the women of Litchfield Penitentiarywho have seized authority, or some sense of autonomy, by forcecreating a makeshift society, negotiating a limited kind of freedom while ordering their new micro government and keeping the howling outer world at bay. Its dystopian and oddly utopian, a kind of fraught, shabby fantasy. So of course there will be some messiness involved things will be scattered, strange, senseless. Intentional or not, Season 5s bumps and potholes start to seem sort of meta textual, the uneven plotting and characterizationstill done with boundless ververeflecting the way the Litchfieldians scramble and fuck up while they struggle to create their own narrative. Though maybe you only get to that forgiving headspace if youre consuming the season in one big gulp. You go a little nuts doing that, starting to see connections and meaning where, maybe, there arent any. Which isnt to say the season is shallow. Its certainly not. After last years stunning Black Lives Matter plaint, the show has, in some ways, doubled down on its political awakening. And while much of its woke messaging is presented in perhaps an overly literal, didactic fashion, theres still an undeniable power in watching women of color and queer women and others voice that language and those ideasabout marginalization and violence and dehumanizationwith such unflinching directness and conviction. This new political bent not that the show wasnt political before last season, but it was less responsive to the goings on in the real world beyond just collecting a bunch of pop culture references has fired up Orange Is the New Blacks always magnificent ensemble. Many of the actors reveal shading and range and modulation we havent seen beforebecause their performances have evolved, and because the characters have deepened over the years, taking on new dimensions and motivations. So thats all good. In that sense, binge or not, Orange Is the New Black is still a rich and varied symphony of textures and tones. But there is some major maintenance to be done. Which, sadly, is clear even when you watch the show like I did, in a hurried and feverish fit of pressing Next episode over and over again. Love that Skip Intro feature, Netflix There are two main problems, as I see it. One is a more mechanical matter that can be rather easily fixed, while the other is a bit trickier to address. The former issue is one thats already been written about elsewhere, so I wont belabor the point. But, briefly the flashbacks probably should go. What were once really exciting and vital facets of the seriesthese glimpses into who these women were in the outside world, learning how they landed in prisonhave become a crutch. They rarely illuminate anything, and often just feel like frustrating distractions keeping us from the more interesting, more urgent main plot. A couple of this seasons flashbacks work welllearning about Alison and her struggles with plural marriage is interesting, the scene in which Janae watches a white high school girl perform Dream. Girls and is angered to tears is piercingbut otherwise they cant compete with the weight of the present. Perhaps the showwhich has switched formats before, shifting from a series all about Piper and her wide eyed entrance into prison life to a true, expertly calibrated ensemble seriescan similarly tweak its use of flashbacks. There could still be a few here and there, mostly for newer characters whom we dont know as well, but the show should mostly focus on the here and now. Because the here and now increasingly means a lotwhen the series gets serious, anyway. Which brings me to the second problem Season 5 exposes. Well, its been a problem for a while, but it becomes almost make or break in this newest run of episodes. Orange Is the New Black really needs to admit to itself that its not a comedy, and not just for awards submission purposes. Though, yes, that would only be fair to actual comedies. Its thrilling to watch this erratic series grapple with contemporary political issues in such eager and, in some senses, earnest fashion. Its one of very few current series actually talking about Black Lives Matter and other civil rights movements in scripted form. Some of that impact is lost, though, when the show feels it also has to give us Litchfields Got Talent and other sad antics of the two dopey meth heads who are great actresses, but its just too much. The show can still be funny, of coursethe way even the hardest of real lives are sometimes funnybut its straining much too hard to make its humor match its heft. And it shouldnt have to. Its O. K. for Orange Is the New Black to become a more grave faced show. We live in grave times Yes, its long been Kohans signature to mix mordant, oddball humor with pathos, so asking her to stop doing that might be a violation of her identity as an artist. But this isnt small time weed selling in suburban California were talking about. This is race and gender and sexuality, and the prison state. That subject matter doesnt need to be offset by cheap bits about diarrhea caused by snorting too much coffeeand in fact, maybe it shouldnt be, out of, I dunno, respect for all the thorny issues that are admirably, if imperfectly, being dealt with.
